Jules Chéret can be considered as the inventor of modern poster on two accounts. He contributed to the improvement of techniques by developing a color printing process for fast mass production as well as the design of posters influencing Bonnard and Lautrec .

The late 1890s poster were represented by various Art Nouveau and symboist styles the most famous of these artists being Mucha. Advertising art then underwent a revival in the hands of Leonetto Cappiello, whose design was based on an arabesque style with vivid contrasting colors.

As the Art deco style took shape from it roots in Cubism, Futurism, and The Ballet Russee the the stylized geometric shapes of Cassandre became popular. Other well known poster artists at this time were Jean Carlu and Paul Colin.
