Notre Dame & Medieval Paris Tours

<Previous >

Notre Dame, located on the Ile de la Cité, its facade, the soaring Gothic ribbed vaulting, its huge light-filled interior and awe-inspiring stained glass windows are magnificent artistic and engineering achievements. In the 12th century architects in northern France wanted to build big impressive Gothic cathedrals, and they wanted their cathedrals to be full of light, so they would be inspiring, not dark and depressing. But if the walls were mostly glass windows, how would they hold up the heavy stone roof? They used flying buttresses at Notre Dame and the Sainte Chapelle in Paris, at Chartres, at Rouen, Reims, and Amiens cathedrals to distribute the lateral load from the roof so the cathedral would not cave in under the weight.

If you were to look at a map of medieval Paris you would see that city was shaped in a circle from the Louvre to Les Halles, on the right bank, and Saint Germain and the Latin Quarter, on the Left bank. At its circumference was Ile de la Cité, where you find the Merovingian Palace (present location of the Conciergerie) and Notre Dame, Church and State! It is in this circle that you can still find remnants of Paris’s medieval past: the rise of Paris as capital, Christianity and gothic architecture and art.
