Collection : Solarized Nudes

25 years ago gay magazines were full of photographic images of sexy men. Thus, the male nude became stigmatized. Photographing the male nude was not considered an art form but rather was relegated to homoerotic pornography. Homosexual men had always photographed their lovers (and other men willing to pose for them) since the onset of photography. Few women dared and even less showed their work publicly. It was at this time that one woman emerged as a pioneer and one of the most important trend setters of the late 20th century; Dianora Niccolini.

Growing up in Florence surrounded by statues of both naked men and women and he great art of the renaissance and Michaelangelo it is no wonder, Diannora choses to photograph muscular men in their prime.

In her photographic studies of the male nude, Dianora explories and stretches artistic boundaries. She illustrates the subtle connections between the naked body and nature, the natural person and our universe. She believes that art is an open ended experience with infinite possibilities. With pride and dignity, she invites the viewer to look upon the body with total acceptance and reverence. In its natural splendor it is the greatest work of art.

Dianora Niccolini is considered to be one of the female pioneers of the male nude in photography. Her male nude images have influenced many photographers from Mapplethorpe, Bruce Weber, Herb Ritts, Nan Goldin, Greg Gorman and probably the Calvin Klein avante-guard brief ads of the 80šs.

Ms. Niccolini has had 2 photographic books published WOMEN OF VISION, Unicorn Publishers-1982, and MEN IN FOCUS - Morgan & Morgan, in 1983). Dianora Niccolini was the first president of THE PROFESSIONAL WOMEN PHOTOGRAPHERS, which she served from 1979 to 1984.

Her photographs continued to be included in group exhibitions throughout most of the 80šs, and 90šs until she met David Leddick who included 15 of her photographs, as well as the cover, THE MALE NUDE book by and published by Taschen in 1998 as well as David Leddick's most recent book, MEN IN THE SUN, published by Universe/Rizzoli in 1999, also includes several of her photographs including the front and back covers.
