TJ Rees
TJ's formal art training was at the Exeter
University in England, but he has had a passion for drawing all
his life. For him, the pencil drawing is a form of pure art, stripped
of extraneous detail to focus attention on the "truth" within the
figure. Although TJ has worked in a range of materials, from ceramics
through textiles, he feels drawing is the medium through which he
is best able to express his fascination with the male form. His
present focus is on the idealized male, caught in moments of tension
or reflection, onto which the audience are invited to layer their
own interpretations and meanings.
Technical details
"I work predominantly with a single 7mm
HB technical pencil, onto a selection of papers or boards, mostly
150 g/m2. Layers of graphite are then gradually built up, from almost
invisible to nearly black. To achieve a full spectrum of shades,
control is essential, but at times an almost trance like state unconsciously
takes over! I work mainly from photo reference, but also love the
spontaneous invention of figures, which are normally rendered in
pencil then completed with pen and ink. Recently I've begun to experiment
with computer colouring, but those works are very much test pieces
thus far."
