Artist Statement:

A majority of my artwork and illustrations utilize strong contrasts of shadow and light, allowing the casual scenes to gain a dreamlike quality and take a step away from waking life. Some folklore archetypes I reclaimed and gave new definitions within these "unrealities"; the crescent moon for example comes from the Nordic stories that depict the satellite as a male deity. The moon represents that unknowable aspect of nature, the secret motions behind rhythm and emotion. It also embodies meditation and self-exploration, a search for definition and identity.

Christian mysticism also serves an important part in my work. It permits a personal channeling of energy, a religious/mystical experience in modern times. Although based in realistic terms, such symbols can be hard to translate beyond their mystery. They exist as a duality, both myth and history, spectre and human. In the end, a greater involvement between viewer and image is created, allowing for the creation of personal symbols and private myths.
