Exhibitions:
The four great Redon albums, fully restored in 2006, are also exhibited here, as are the studio drawings, which give a better understanding of the complex relationship between Naturalism and Symbolism.
from 16 October 2007 - 6 January 2008
The theme of this temporary exhibition is social reportage and its beginnings. It shows how photographers through the 19th century viewed factory workers, artisans, farm labourers, the poor and the dispossessed, and even communities barely touched by western civilisation. The word "reporter", used for an investigative journalist, came into the French language at the beginning of the 19th century, with the rapidly developing newspaper industry. Photographic reporting had really existed since the invention of photography on paper at the beginning of the 1840s, but it was limited to a relatively small circle. It was to develop in the 20th century with the improvement in cameras and the boom in illustrated magazines, but it had to wait until the simultaneous printing of photographs and text could finally be produced on a large scale.

Ferdinand Hodler was considered during his lifetime as a leading artist in the Modernist movement. Born in Berne in 1853, he lived in Geneva until his death in 1918, but this was a European career marked by both success and scandal. He was a member of the great Secessions and saw his work acclaimed in Vienna, Berlin and Munich. His triumph in Paris came in 1891 when his seminal painting Night (Berne, Kunstmuseum), was banned by the city of Geneva for reasons of obscenity. But at the same time, he was receiving major public commissions from Zurich, Geneva, Iena and Frankfurt.
