About Tony
Tony began his career with National Geographic Magazine in 1971. Since then, his camera has taken him to over thirty countries in as many years - from Iceland to the Amazon.

Like most photographers, he is a series of contrasts: His lens has captured the frozen landscapes of Iceland and the sweltering jungles of the Amazon.

He is probably most known for his beautiful travel photography, yet while working with the human figure, his sensitivity rivals that of the great painters. Indeed, his artistic life began as a young painter trained in the classical manner. He studied classical piano at the prestigious Eastman School of Music and taught himself to play the bluegrass banjo. He lived in Brazil as a teenager and Italy as a college student. In 1995, he returned to Rome, Italy to continue his painting and to learn how to sculpt in the classical manner under one of Rome's most gifted sculptors, Alessandro Nocera.

"Painting was my first passion. and by the time I was 16, I was painting on commissions and selling my work for more than the monthly mortgage payment on our home. I discovered the camera when I was 17. My high school art teacher took me into the darkroom to see how printing was done. When I saw that first image miraculously appear I was hooked. That night I announced to my family that I was no longer going to paint, that I was going to be a professional photographer. My father, old Italian that he was, almost killed me, since I gave half of all my commissions to him. My mother intervened and the rest is history."

While a student at the University of Rochester, he was invited by Kodak to hang out with their photographers who provided him with valuable training and tons of free film and development for four years. This opportunity proved invaluable and eventually led to working with National Geographic Magazine.

Boccaccio's very first photograph was of Hercules in the Orion constellation. He was 13 years old and had just purchased his first camera, a Mark IV plastic box camera. He took it apart and rigged it to make time exposures of the stars. He still has the negative!

"I believe this first impulse to point my camera upward, to the heavens, is what set the framework for my future photography: to capture what can't easily be seen by the naked eye. To capture the heroic, graceful beauty and grandeur of the world."

Boccaccio's photography of the nude began in 1976 while on assignment in the Mohave Desert.  In 1978 he began Dreams, a portfolio of color images taken directly from his own dream diaries.  Black and white photography of the male nude came later in his career and in 1992 he began creating a series of fine art portfolios on various themes, the first being Sleeping Beauties. His most recent work, entitled Imago Dei, includes many of the images in the Manstouch collection.

Itinerary

Sunday - Beginnings

• Welcome & Orientation

• Social Hour in Piazza Navona beneath the great fountains of Bernini

• Dinner at an authentic Roman Style Restaurant (included in package)

• Free time

Orientation begins at 4pm.

After our orientation and social hour, we'll enjoy a delicious Roman dinner in one of Rome's many charming restaurants, compliments of Imaging In Italy. If you're still up to it after dinner, you will be able to explore on your own or enjoy typical Italian desert in one of a thousand sidewalk cafes.

Monday - Making A Great Photograph

• Visual thinking & Photography

• Workshop - Visual Thinking & Photography

• Location photography at St. Peterís Square -

• Lunch at typical Trattoria (included in package)

• Free time

• Night photography at Castel Sant' Angelo

Doing is by far the best way to learn, and so we will be spending most of our time on-site in Rome making photographs.

We will approach the subject of visual thinking and photography by the avenue of your own experience.

The week will be filled with YOUR experiences as you walk through Rome making photographs. But don't worry, "Antonio" will always be available to suggest the best angles. He's been photographing Rome for over 20 years!

We will have lunch in one of Rome's finest and quaintest trattorias, Antica Taverna. Your host, Paolo, will serve you a bubbly proseco wine even before you find your table. Get ready for the treat of a lifetime! Paolo and his chefs have a very special meal planned for you - it will be a sumptuous feast filled with a variety of antipastos, salads, pastas meat dishes and deserts. And don't forget the finishing touches of coffee and the Italian specialty, grappa. You'll be talking about this feast for months to come! After lunch, you'll be free to wander about or pull out your camera and practice your new techniques.

Rome by night is magical and we would be remiss if we didn't include a workshop on photographing after sunset. We will have an on-site photographic session overlooking the Tiber River at Castel Sant'Angelo and then St. Peter's Square. You'll need a tripod, and although large tripods are generally forbidden in Rome, a small table-top tripod will be just perfect for this session. We'll learn and even better way to shoot at night without the use of a tripod!

Tuesday - Imagination & Photographic Vision

• Workshop

• Personal tutoring on-site (optional)

• Free time

• Piazza Navona & The Pantheon - Photographing the Great Piazzas

• Villa Borghese - The great gardens of Rome

• Seminar & refreshments in Villa Borghese Gardens (included in package)

• Photographing the Sunset at Belvedere & Piazza del Popolo

Most days will begin with a short seminar. Your afternoons generally will be spent applying what you have learned during the week. You may wish to work on a one-to-one basis with Antonio; he will be happy to provide individual tutoring. Every day will be full of activity, learning and enjoyable social events, but you will always have ample time for yourself ´ to wander about the city, to shop or to visit a museum.

Wednesday - Seeing As Never Before

• Train to Medieval town near Rome

• Photography on location - Techniques for a new environment

• Lunch in a quaint trattoria (included in package)

• Personal tutoring on-site

• Return to Rome by train

• Free time

Today we will travel by train to a quaint Medieval town near Rome. On the way you may see ancient stone aqueduct still standing (and still used!) crisscrossing rolling green pastures dotted with sheep, olive orchards, vineyards and the occasional Roman ruin.

As in almost any small Medieval town in Italy you can experience life in ways as it was and has been for centuries ‚ unchanged by time and innovation. You will be able to see first-hand what it must have been like for people like Michelangelo and Bernini as they lived and worked in and around Rome. How time has stood still even as the modern world is present ‚ an intriguing contrast which will stimulate your visual, imaginative and creative senses.

Before we "disappear" into the labyrinths of the city, we'll have a short seminar. Then you'll be free to wander about with your camera and "lose yourself" in the winding cobblestone streets. Then get ready for a "peasants" lunch in one of the most delightful trattorias in the city. You will eat in the manner of the locals - no real menu, just what the chef (who is also the owner) has cooked up for the day. Afterward, we'll have time to wander about this old city and continue photographing the Medieval architecture, colorful storefronts, and friendly local inhabitants.

Thursday - Capturing the Light at The Right Time & The Right Place

• Early morning photography at St. Peter's Basilica Inside St. Peter's Basilica

• Free time Lunch near the Forum (included in package)

• The Coliseum

• Photographing the Roman Forum

• Walking-Photographic tour from the Forum to the Campidoglio

• Free time

Today we'll get up early to catch the morning sunrise over St. Peter's Basilica. The morning light lasts only a few moments as the gold and pink rays of the sunrise bathe the magnificent facade of St. Peter's.

After the photographic session, we'll go inside St. Peter's Basilica. Get ready for a momentary shock as you enter through the huge brass doors. The immensity of this architectural wonder is breathtaking. Filled with exquisite statues, marble columns, ornate altars and works of art by some of Italy's greatest artists, St. Peter's is truly one of the world's marvelous treasures. And you'll be able to see and photograph Michelangelo's famous Pieta'.

Time to take a break. After leaving St. Peter's you'll have the morning free to have a cappuccino in one of the many sidewalk cafe's or wander into the Centro Storico to make more photographs.

Bring lots of film because, or lots of memory if you are shooting with a digital camera - as you will have already discovered, thereís much to photograph: The Coliseum, the Roman Forum, the Campidoglio by Michelangelo, Trevi Fountain, The Pantheon, Piazza Navona, Castel SantíAngelo, The Tiber River, St. Peterís Basilica in Vatican City, hundreds of churches, thousands of marble statues and museums of every kind.

Friday - Wrapping It Up

• Looking Back, Looking Forward

• Show your work

• Free time

• Concluding Workshop at Piazza Trilussa - Trastevere

• Exclusive Farewell Dinner (included in package)

Today we will bring the weekís workshops, events and activities into focus. This is a time to share what each of us has learned and experienced. We will spend a few hours in the morning showing your work and talking about your photography. The rest of the day is just for you. "Antonio" will be available to answer questions you may have. In the evening, there will be a farewell party in a very special restaurant reserved just for you!

Saturday - "Ci Vediamo" - Farewell, until next time!

This is not the end of your journey - but only the beginning. As you return home or continue on in your travels you'll take with you not only the many memorable experiences you enjoyed in Rome, but also a wealth of new tools and skills which will continue to invigorate your photography, imagination and creative powers.
