Boulevard du Montparnasse
Blvd du Montparnasse is lined with cafes and restaurants which are evocative of the exciting period when the area was "hip". The large Art Deco brasserie, 'La Coupole', at #102, which opened in 1927 with columns decorated by different artists; the famed Dome at #108, now a luxurious fish restaurant and bar, the 'Rotonde'and the late-night cafe, Le Select at #99. Further east along the boulevard is the legendary La Closerie des Lilas a favorite with Picasso and Hemingway, Lenin and Trotsky, and still has a clientele of politicians and publishers.
There are many good Breton creperies off blvd. Du Montparnasse as Gare Montparnasse serves the northwest coast of France and in the 19th century many immigrants from Brittany settled here.

The "heyday"of Montparnasse was during the early 1900's when artists such as Picasso, his poet friend Apollinaire, Leger, and Soutine, moved from Montmartre, where the rents had become too high, to Montparnasse. Between the wars Chagall, Zadkine and other Russian expatriates made their homes here as well as Americans; writers Henry Miller, Exra Pound and Gertrude Stein and the photographer Man Ray. Mondrian moved here in 1926 and was where he died and his mistress committed suicide. Foujita, Braque, Rouault and Klee lived in Montparnasse, while the famous artist's muse and friend, Kiki, reigned here. It was a very lively 'avant-garde'scene with cafes and jazz clubs where the artists, writers and intellectuals met, discussed, drank, ate.
