While Paris may be known as the city of love and romance, France is the land of great food and wine. As the country’s capital, you and your loved are sure to find your hearts delight in one of the city’s romantic candlelit restaurants, vaulted cellar wine bar, decadent sweets shops perfect for an intimate tea for two.

Before end of the monarchy, all the most delicious delicacies, patisseries, champagnes and winces were exclusively reserved for the King and his court. Legendary French dishes and fantastical pastries that still exist today were often creations of the ostentations court of the Louis’s. Some of these foods and drinks were even believed to have aphrodisiac powers. There is no end to the treats to be tasted and shared… you might even consider it extensive foreplay!

Whether you prefer to sip wine at the Café Flore or champagne at the Grand Vefour, the romance of sharing fine dining in an elegant setting still inspires romance that is a part of Paris’s legendary appeal.

History
Before end of the monarchy, all the most delicious delicacies, patisseries, champagnes and winces were exclusively reserved for the King and his court. Legendary French dishes and fantastical pastries that still exist today were often creations of the ostentations court of the Louis’s. Some of these foods and drinks were even believed to have aphrodisiac powers.

Champagne, chocolates, oysters were especially guarded treats for amorous affairs at court. Certain courtesans even became famous for knowing how to prepare menus that invigorated theirs lover’s ardor!

While the good society flocked to the Paris tea salons, less innocent romance was taking place in a number of restaurants with private salons. At the time, adultery was punished as a crime if the couple was found in a public place, this included hotels and restaurants.

In order to skirt this predicament, restaurants constructed private backdoors and stairwells where important clients could dine with their mistress in the exclusive private salons. George Sand and Frederick Chopin were said to be frequent diners at the famous restaurant Laperouse, whose private salons can still be enjoyed today.

With the downfall of the monarchy, many delicacies that had exclusively reserved for the nobility became available to the masses. Champagne, patisseries, chocolate and other delicacies started popping up in restaurants and boutiques all over the city. However the pleasure remained the terrain of men as it was illegal for a woman to sit by herself in a terrace café!

Women could frequent tea salons without being accompanied by a man. The tea salons were decorated in a cozy dim lit ambiance. They became legendary as a place to meet and be seen over a cup of hot chocolate, believed to be an aphrodisiac for women at the time.
